Just under 40 hectares of old water meadow, rough grazing, reed-beds and alder and willow carr. The area is intersected by the River Dun and the Kennet and Avon Canal. Most of the area is managed by the Town and Manor of Hungerford, but the section to the east is a BBOWT reserve with restricted access. Cattle graze most of both areas.
Throughout the year one may see Little Grebes, Kingfishers, Grey Wagtails, Cetti's Warblers and Reed Buntings. In the summer Reed, Sedge and in some years Grasshopper Warblers breed. In the winter there are Snipe and often Siskins in the alders. Water Rails are seen or heard from time to time. In the autmun it is worth checking the cows' feet for Yellow Wagtails running between them. The area is a stronghold for the now threatened Water Vole.
To reach the area from the centre of Hungerford, go west along Church Street past the fire station, and take the first or second tunrning on the right. Park beside the churchyard. Walk through the churchyard and across the canal.
